Investment Notes
You are welcome to listen to our quarterly economic and investment update, recorded on 11 January 2024, with the following contributors from London Wall Partners (“LWP”):
  • Ian McCafferty, CBE, former member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee and member of the LWP Investment Committee;
  • Stuart Fowler, Investment Director of LWP; and
  • Nick Fletcher, Senior Partner of LWP and Chairman of the Investment Committee.
In summary, it was agreed that the markets finished 2023 on a positive note in light of potential interest rate cuts in 2024. Ian expressed his view that markets appear to be expecting the best of all possible worlds, and it is not inconceivable this might be right, but the odds may be against this; Stuart highlighted the stock market’s enthusiasm for obesity drugs, notably those launched by Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, while also dissecting some lingering pandemic-related issues affecting certain businesses. This was supplemented by an update on performance of the funds we recommend; Nick re-emphasised the risk / reward opportunity of short-term bonds and the prospective changes in the forthcoming budget on 6 March, which may offer the opportunity of a review of clients' estate planning strategies.
